I have learned that there are two different meaning to the word comfort or comforter. In our modern day definition it is about feeling better or making someone feel better. But if you look in Biblical dictionaries, it is about being with and standing along side someone in trouble. So in todays world it is all about feelings but in God's world it is all about action, about servanthood. He comforts us by being with us, we comfort others by being with them. It makes perfect sense. He calls himself our comforter and He tells us He is always with us. Our problem as frail humans is to realize He is with us and to rely on Him instead of our simple feelings.
O - We can comfort others in the same image that God comforts us. Once we understand that when we have gone through trials and God was with us and helped us through those trials, we can walk along side someone else to assist them.
A - Learning what a comforter really is has been eye opening to me. Knowing it is not about feelings but about helping and serving puts me in a position to comfort others and do so the way God has comforted me. This knowledge will also change the way I offer comfort, it will be more personal and less about things.
P - Father thank you for opening my eyes to your definition of comfort. Thank you for always bringing me back to servanthood and helping to keep me on the path of your son Jesus. He was the ultimate comforter and the perfect example of servanthood. Thank you for the opportunity to be a servant to others and to comfort others. Most of all, thank you for walking with me through my trials and being my comforter. In Jesus name, Amen.
