1This is my second letter to you, dear friends, and in both of them I have tried to stimulate your wholesome thinking and refresh your memory. 2I want you to remember what the holy prophets said long ago and what our Lord and Savior commanded through your apostles.
3Most importantly, I want to remind you that in the last days scoffers will come, mocking the truth and following their own desires. 4They will say, “What happened to the promise that Jesus is coming again? From before the times of our ancestors, everything has remained the same since the world was first created.”
Peter is stimulating the intellect of the heart of Christians here. He is telling us not to forget what was said and what was promised and what has been seen. He wants us to always remember what our Lord has taught us through the prophets and scriptures. He emphasizes that there are going to be many that do not believe, will call us crazy and mock us and follow their own ways. They will sarcastically ask, so where is this savior and where is this promise of his return? We need to be wary of those individuals and not fall into their traps. We will see that everything is the same and will be renewed and restored to it's original creation.
5They deliberately forget that God made the heavens long ago by the word of his command, and he brought the earth out from the water and surrounded it with water. 6Then he used the water to destroy the ancient world with a mighty flood. 7And by the same word, the present heavens and earth have been stored up for fire. They are being kept for the day of judgment, when ungodly people will be destroyed.
God's word is so powerful. He created the heavens and earth with his very word. Buy His command he created the waters and he used those same waters to destroy the earth once before. By his same word he promised to keep the day of judgement and destroy the ungodly once again and this time by fire. Fire purify's and it burns away all the junk. New creation that comes from fire destroyed earth is fresh and clean and pure. The sin of this world will not go unpunished forever. The ungodly will be destroyed by fire so that a new heaven and new earth can be brought forth.
8But you must not forget this one thing, dear friends: A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day.
This is where we just can not wrap our minds around the awesomeness of who God is. We wonder when and how long. But then to hear that our constraints of time do not apply to the creator is beyond our comprehension. God does not see time like we do. He can accomplish in a day what could take a man a thousand years to accomplish. The point of this verse, is that we must be patient and wait for God to operate in his time not ours.
9The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.
When I read this verse, I am just filled with joy at the awesome mercy and grace of our great Savior. He isn'e being slow, He just doesn't want anyone to be destroyed. He is giving mankind time to repent. This is the very reason he send the disciples into all the world to proclaim the Good News. He wants all people everywhere to have the opportunity to ask for forgiveness and to come to him. He wants all of us to be with him in Heaven. Everyone is invited. Sadly though, there will be those that reject that invitation. We need to preach the Gospel and take advantage of this time that God is allowing.
10But the day of the Lord will come as unexpectedly as a thief. Then the heavens will pass away with a terrible noise, and the very elements themselves will disappear in fire, and the earth and everything on it will be found to deserve judgment.
The day of the Lord here is not referring to the Rapture (where the faithful are taken to Heaven). No this is the day at the very end of that period, the end of history as we know it. God's fiery judgement destroys the earth we know. Everything will pass away and receive God's judgement.
11Since everything around us is going to be destroyed like this, what holy and godly lives you should live,
This verse reminds us of the temporary world we live in. That it will disappear and the only way not to be here for God's fiery judgement is to live holy and for Christ.
12looking forward to the day of God and hurrying it along. On that day, he will set the heavens on fire, and the elements will melt away in the flames. 13But we are looking forward to the new heavens and new earth he has promised, a world filled with God’s righteousness.
We are reminded that we have a new heaven and new early to look forward to. We were promised this by God himself and we will get the opportunity to live in a world fill with God's righteousness. It is even suggested that we can hurry it along by committing ourselves to spreading the message of Jesus Christ though out the whole world.
14And so, dear friends, while you are waiting for these things to happen, make every effort to be found living peaceful lives that are pure and blameless in his sight.
15And remember, our Lord’s patience gives people time to be saved. This is what our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you with the wisdom God gave him--16speaking of these things in all of his letters. Some of his comments are hard to understand, and those who are ignorant and unstable have twisted his letters to mean something quite different, just as they do with other parts of Scripture. And this will result in their destruction.
So we are to live peaceful as we wait for the return of our Savior. We are to live pure. We can know that God simple wants more people to be saved. We need to rely on the very wisdom that was given to us through the scriptures, both NT and OT. Many people have twisted those scriptures and they have been doing it since the beginning of scripture. When you don't learn the true meaning of scripture or you twist is and use it for evil, it will result in your destruction.
Peter’s Final Words
17You already know these things, dear friends. So be on guard; then you will not be carried away by the errors of these wicked people and lose your own secure footing. 18Rather, you must grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
All glory to him, both now and forever! Amen.
We are given this knowledge and since we know what to look for, we must be careful and guard our hearts from the wicked. Continue in your growth and knowledge of Our Lord Jesus Christ. He gets all the Glory, always.
