1This letter is from John, the elder.
I am writing to the chosen lady and to her children, whom I love in the truth—as does everyone else who knows the truth--
There are some that think the chosen lady referred to above is a specific godly woman in the church, but most believe that the chosen lady is symbolic of the church and her believers. John is telling us we share a love for one another because we know the truth.
2because the truth lives in us and will be with us forever.
That truth is the Holy Spirit. Once we have accepted Jesus Christ and been baptized by the Holy Spirit you will know love and the truth of Christ.
3Grace, mercy, and peace, which come from God the Father and from Jesus Christ—the Son of the Father—will continue to be with us who live in truth and love.
When we receive God's grace, we have also accepted the responsibility to guard the truth and to love others.
Live in the Truth
4How happy I was to meet some of your children and find them living according to the truth, just as the Father commanded.
John was pleased to find the church truly operating in God's will. They were living their lives according to God's very command to love.
5I am writing to remind you, dear friends, that we should love one another. This is not a new commandment, but one we have had from the beginning. 6Love means doing what God has commanded us, and he has commanded us to love one another, just as you heard from the beginning.
In the versed above we are being reminded to love each other. John keeps giving us this same message over and over. It must carry great importance. Then he goes on to give an additional definition of love. Doing what God has commanded us is a form of God's love. It is the same message that has been taught since the beginning.
7I say this because many deceivers have gone out into the world. They deny that Jesus Christ came in a real body. Such a person is a deceiver and an antichrist. 8Watch out that you do not lose what we have worked so hard to achieve. Be diligent so that you receive your full reward.
John also is continually warning us of false prophets and how deceptive they can be. The only true protection from these false prophets is to stay in God's love and be obedient to His commands. Don't lose what you have worked so hard to find.
9Anyone who wanders away from this teaching has no relationship with God. But anyone who remains in the teaching of Christ has a relationship with both the Father and the Son.
If you wander away from the teachings that you know with God, you lose that relationship. To lose that relationship could result in turning away from God and being deceived by the false prophets.
10If anyone comes to your meeting and does not teach the truth about Christ, don’t invite that person into your home or give any kind of encouragement. 11Anyone who encourages such people becomes a partner in their evil work.
When you know there is someone spouting false doctrine in your midst, do not give that person a platform, do not encourage them. If you encourage them at all you could be partnering with evil.
12I have much more to say to you, but I don’t want to do it with paper and ink. For I hope to visit you soon and talk with you face to face. Then our joy will be complete.
13Greetings from the children of your sister, chosen by God.
John is amazing. He not only send this church a letter but is going to follow up with a personal visit. He also related to them as children chosen by God.
