Greetings from Peter
1This letter is from Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ.
I am writing to God’s chosen people who are living as foreigners in the provinces of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia. 2God the Father knew you and chose you long ago, and his Spirit has made you holy. As a result, you have obeyed him and have been cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ.
May God give you more and more grace and peace.
God's people were chosen long ago, the Father knew them and made the holy. They were sanctified. The results are the forgiveness of sin by the blood of Jesus Christ and more and more grace and peace. God operates this way for us. We are chosen the results of our obedience and cleaning by the blood of Jesus is that God will give us too, more and more grace and peace.
The Hope of Eternal Life
3All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation, 4and we have a priceless inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay. 5And through your faith, God is protecting you by his power until you receive this salvation, which is ready to be revealed on the last day for all to see.
Here it is affirmed that it is by God's mercy that we have been born again. We are all due for the inheritance in heaven. In Heaven we are beyond the reach of the earthly issues of change and decay. It is because of our faith that we are protected by God and thru salvation that we are ready to have everything revealed to us.
6So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while. 7These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.
Here Peter talks about suffering for our faith in Christ. We are encouraged to rejoice during our difficulties and remain faithful, this will purify our faith. He uses the comparison of fire purifying gold. When gold is put in the fire, all the impurities are burned away and lost. All that is left is pure gold without the junk. That is how we are, if we can maintain our faith thru everything. The junk will be lost and burned away by the fires of our trials and sufferings. So always give God, the praise and glory and honor regardless of what you may be facing.
8You love him even though you have never seen him. Though you do not see him now, you trust him; and you rejoice with a glorious, inexpressible joy. 9The reward for trusting him will be the salvation of your souls.
10This salvation was something even the prophets wanted to know more about when they prophesied about this gracious salvation prepared for you.
God considers faith of Christians that have not seen Christ more remarkable than the faith of those who saw and heard him in person before and after his resurrection. Believers now, although they have never seen him, love him and give their lives to him. According to Jesus, this is a special blessing. He tells us in John 20:29 Then Jesus told him, “You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me
11They wondered what time or situation the Spirit of Christ within them was talking about when he told them in advance about Christ’s suffering and his great glory afterward.
Our faith is based both on the Word of God in the NT as well as God's Word in the OT. The Holy Spirit, through the OT prophets, predicted Christ's suffering as well as his miracles and glories. The Holy Spirit is referred to as the Spirit of Christ because he spoke about Christ through the prophets and he was sent by Christ. The Holy Spirit continues to reveal the truth of Christ and bring honor to him.
12They were told that their messages were not for themselves, but for you. And now this Good News has been announced to you by those who preached in the power of the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. It is all so wonderful that even the angels are eagerly watching these things happen.
The Holy Spirit guided and inspired the OT prophets and revealed to them, that which would be fulfilled in Christ. The Spirit also inspired those who delivered the truth and teachings of Christ as we have in the NT. The power of the Holy Spirit sent from Heaven was so powerful that even the angels desired to watch all that was happening.
A Call to Holy Living
13So prepare your minds for action and exercise self-control. Put all your hope in the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world. 14So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then. 15But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. 16For the Scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy.”
We are told here to prepare for action. We are told to have self control. We have been warned that we must be ready. We have to know where to put our hope and we are also told where that belongs. Count on your salvation in Jesus Christ. He is the only way we can be prepared. We have to depend on him so as not to fall into the ways of the world or our own sinful desires. Without Christ, we don't know any better, but because our our obedience and the grace of His salvation we must be holy, because He is holy.
17And remember that the heavenly Father to whom you pray has no favorites. He will judge or reward you according to what you do. So you must live in reverent fear of him during your time here as “temporary residents.” 18For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value.
A simple reminder that God purchased or bought back our very souls with the price of his Son, Jesus Christ. We have been liberated from the power of Satan and we must live that way. Our actions reveal our faith and our very heavenly reward depends on us maintaining that faith and acting accordingly.
19It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God. 20God chose him as your ransom long before the world began, but now in these last days he has been revealed for your sake.
God's Word clearly conveys that Christ's sacrificial death is what secures the believers spiritual salvation. It is being revealed to us so that we can know for sure. God's plan was laid our even before creation or human history. He had already set in place a plan to rescue us from a sinful death or eternal separation. At just the right time, he sent his Son, Jesus to finalize the perfect plan of forgiveness.
21Through Christ you have come to trust in God. And you have placed your faith and hope in God because he raised Christ from the dead and gave him great glory.
22You were cleansed from your sins when you obeyed the truth, so now you must show sincere love to each other as brothers and sisters. Love each other deeply with all your heart.
23For you have been born again, but not to a life that will quickly end. Your new life will last forever because it comes from the eternal, living word of God. 24As the Scriptures say,
“People are like grass;
their beauty is like a flower in the field.
The grass withers and the flower fades.
25But the word of the Lord remains forever.”
And that word is the Good News that was preached to you.
Because we place our faith in Him, because we know he rose from the dead for us, because we know he forgave us our sins, now we must be obedient to Him. We must show him praise and glory. We much love each other and do so deeply. We have been born again and our new lives will last forever. The Word of God last forever. His Word is our Gospel, our Good News. It has been preached to us and will be with us for eternity.
